I was always interested in math and computers as a child, so it was no surprise that I would wind up with a career in computer programming. Graduating in 1998 with a degree in computer science, I started working immediately with a large insurance company. As part of a small team, I was tasked with taking the company’s legacy insurance applications and wrapping them with a web based interface that would allow agents to process insurance claims online.
After a few years with the insurance company, I then moved on to join a local trade journal publisher. Here, I was instrumental in starting and maintaining the e-media group, which would ultimately become a multi-million dollar revenue generating department within the organization. During my 8 years with the company, I teamed up with a friend and co-worker and started taking on small and medium sized freelance projects during our spare time. As we continued to land more and more projects, we decided to officially leave and run our own shop full time.
Running my own web development studio full time lasted for about 4 years, before I decided that the stress and anxiety involved in running my own business was just too much. Plus, I was beginning to feel with the stress of the day to day operations that I was losing sight of my true passion which was (and is) development. So, presented with an opportunity that I simply could not refuse, I decided to jump back into the corporate world again. I haven’t regretted that decision for a second! (Sure I miss the flex time and obvious benefits of running my own business, but I don’t miss the stress and $1,000+ monthly insurance premiums!)
At 35, I finally decided that it was time to do something about my health and physical fitness (or lack thereof) and decided to join Crossfit. I’ve been doing it consistently for over a year and I’ve never felt better! It is truly a terrific program and I cannot say enough positive things about it!
When I’m not coding I’m usually playing with my 8 year old son or hanging out with my wife and/or friends/family. And when I’m not doing that, I’m watching movies or playing on the Xbox or PlayStation!
